Where Does It Come From?

Vision Quest is a pan-cultural, ancient rite of passage. Native Americans are known for this tradition in North America but variations of Vision Questing were practiced by countless indigenous cultures around the globe.

While customs and forms of the Vision Quest may vary, all of them enact the symbolic death of an old life and the beginning (birth) of a new one. In indigenous societies the negotiation through distinct life stages was considered vital to the development of a person. Rites of Passage like the Vision Quest were the bridges that helped one cross over from one life stage to another successfully. Within the ritual, the individual was challenged and invited to claim the very qualities and strengths within themselves that were needed in their next life stage. Thus, for example, the initiation into adult- or elder-hood was marked.

Today, in the complexity and demanding reality of our modern and rapidly changing world transitions into a fuller expression or ourselves are deeply called for and yet lacking widely in our society.

Open Sky Journeys is committed to reintroduce Vision Quest into modern culture. We use the bare bones of the ancient model of a traditional Rite of Passage and combine them with the today’s needs.
