| Birth as a Rite of Passage |
|
Birth is the oldest Rite of Passage known to mankind. From all the kinds of powerful changes a human can go through, this is the only one that literally brings forth new life. The human family's survival depends on he capacity of women to birth new life. The awe and respect for the mystery and power of birth has been deeply ingrained in the human psyche from the beginning of time. Today, in the flurry of options that the medical world offers, some of the sense of power and magic has been replaced with a sense of security and control that options like cesarean and epidurals offer. And yet, every woman that carries a precious new life within her feels the ancient weight of the enormous task ahead of her. How will she master the ordeal of birth? What will give her the strength to step through the gate of birth into motherhood? And, as a mother, who will she become? Pregnancy is a sacred time of deep connection with the very source of life. We can all attest to the glow and beauty of the Goddess in every woman with child. And yet, in the richness and blessing of this time, women are also tested by her fears. In the gift of birth we are nudged by the knowing (awareness) of death. In the great potential for newness and gift also lies the shadow of fear about what could go wrong. No wonder we don't always feel as glowing on the outside as we appear on the outside. Pregnancy is a vulnerable time. It pushes us relentlessly to make room for new life to come. As our bodies stretch to the limit of what we think possible, so do our psyches. The impending birth insists on internal transformation. At birth, the woman will become a mother. She will enter a new stage in her life. Is she ready? What will she need to leave behind in order to bring forth new life? What is she calling in for her next life stage? What is offered in this course is no practical birth preparation and does not substitute any of the medical preparations for birth. What is offered in this course is to work with birth as a Rite of Passage that marks the transition from one life stage to another. We will explore the inner landscape of our lives up to this point in your life. We will empower you to clarify your intent for your new life and the qualities you want to call in for it. We will sit in Council, aware that as we all share who we are, our stories will form a collective voice that empowers us all while nourishing our individual myth.
